Yorktown-based nonprofit Alliance for Safe Kids (ASK) has had its own television show for almost a year now, but is looking to start a new program called “Ask at Home.”
“We thought it would be fun to showcase local families that make the time to get the family together,” said Lisa Tomeny, executive director of ASK. “We felt like it was a natural extension of what we were already doing with the show, as a way to offer our community support by showing what other families are already doing.”
Tomeny explained the new idea would be more involved, as the group would have to film the show on scene, at a house for example, and show what a family does to eat together and make it about the family.
For now, though, ASK continues its regular programming of inviting local community members to explain the support they give Yorktown youth. Tomeny said guests on the show have included members of the Students Against Drunk Driving from the high school, members of Yorktown’s Youth Court officers from the Yorktown Police Department and chairpersons of Yorktown Relay for Life. Whether the guests directly interact with Yorktown’s youth, or act indirectly as support for the community, it’s ASK’s mission to get their message out, Tomeny said.
“We want to highlight the richness of our community,” she said. “We have to support each other who are out there to support our youth.”
The Alliance for Safe Kids’ current program “Ask Around Yorktown” airs on Thursdays at 7 p.m. on Cablevision channel 74.
