On Saturday, June 10th, the Alliance for Safe Kids (ASK) hosted a DARE Celebration Party for DARE graduates in Yorktown and Lakeland School Districts.
78 5th grade students came together to celebrate and put their DARE skills to work in a fun, safe and substance-free environment at Solaris Sports Club. Activities included basketball contests, dancing and games.
The event was chaperoned by 22 high school volunteers, 21 adult volunteers, ASK staff and monitored by the Yorktown police department as part of their patrol route.
“The DARE program envisions a world in which students everywhere are empowered to respect others and choose to lead lives free from violence, substance abuse, and other dangerous behaviors,” said Liz Talbert, Coalition Coordinator at ASK. “Yorktown Police Detective, Richie Finn, really connects with the students in this program and promotes positive messaging with hopes to positively influence their decision making skills when encountering dangerous situations. We are very lucky to have this program available in our community.”
A special thank you to KeyBank, PhysicianOne Urgent Care and Deep River Snacks for sponsoring the DARE Celebration in 2017 as well as to the employees from Kohl’s in Cortlandt Manor for volunteering at this event.
