Use of heroin and other opioids is increasing among local high school students and even younger children in the Lower Hudson Valley, according to local drug counselors who are championing increased school-based efforts to combat addiction.
During the 2014-15 school year, nine Westchester high school students told counselors with Student Assistance Services that they had used heroin. Fifty-nine students from 33 Westchester high schools reported using the painkiller Oxycodone and 29 reported using Percocet without a prescription.
