The Alliance for Safe Kids, Inc. (ASK) will be hosting their Eighth Annual Save A Life Forum on Sunday, March 18th from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Lakeland High School located at 1349 East Main Street, Shrub Oak, New York 10588. Save A Life is a program designed to inform and empower high school students and adults to be community allies and first responders to support teens and families in crisis. As one of ASK’s leading programs, Save A Life has directly touched the lives of over 3,000 community members since 2010. Last year, nearly 500 members of the community attended.
This year’s Save A Life will feature Dr. Michael Fowlin, a globally recognized clinical psychologist as the Keynote Speaker. Dr. Fowlin received his undergraduate degree in psychology from Evangel University and received a doctorate degree in psychology from Rutgers University. His program combined with his acting talents and psychology, create an atmosphere of worldwide inclusion towards all people, leaving audiences empowered to accept the differences in themselves and others.
“I look forward to taking part in the Eighth Annual Save A Life Forum,” said Dr. Fowlin. “My work intersects with the mission of Save A Life by the very nature of my strong emphasis on the emotional safety of students and adults. Only when we are willing to look at and transform our own pain into something greater, to help others heal, can we truly create a safe environment.”
“Save A Life is a great experience,” said Yorktown High School junior Christina Ruvo. “I have attended the past two Save A Life’s and am looking forward to this year’s event. The workshops and keynote speaker always present eye opening information about drug, alcohol and mental health awareness.”
In addition to this year’s Keynote Speaker, ASK will also host interactive workshops for both high school students and adults on topics such as Alcohol Poisoning & Drug Overdose, Bullying & Cyberbullying, Dating Safety, House Parties, Marijuana, Tobacco & Vaping, Stress & Anxiety, Understanding The Heroin Epidemic, and Youth Mental Health. Save A Life will also showcase dozens of local organizations and resources for adults and students throughout the event with an interactive exhibit hall.
“Save A Life is a fantastic opportunity for the adults and youth of Yorktown to learn together about many of the very important mental health issues being dealt with all around us,” said Karen Profita, LCSW-R, YCSD Social Worker. “Being exposed to these topics through workshops provided by professionals and gaining information decreases the stigma and increases ones ability to recognize and reach out to get help for someone they know, or even themselves. I hope that the community comes out to join us on March 18 at Save A Life and helps us keep the safety net in Yorktown strong!”
