Yorktown Heights, NY: October 22nd – 26th is Red Ribbon Week, a National effort to educate children about the dangers of drug and alcohol use.
Red Ribbon Week has grown into the most far-reaching and well-known drug prevention campaign in America. It began to honor a drug enforcement agent who was killed in 1985 while working undercover in Mexico. In response to his murder, friends and family wore red ribbons in memory of his crusade against illegal drug use in this country. Today, the red ribbon has come to symbolize the importance of discussing and choosing a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
The Alliance for Safe Kids will be promoting Red Ribbon Week in cooperation with the Town of Yorktown by placing red ribbons throughout the community. Our youth will also be participating in age-appropriate prevention activities during the week at their schools. The ribbons serve as a reminder to our families to take the time to discuss the concepts of Red Ribbon Week.
“Research shows that children are less likely to use alcohol and other drugs when parents and other role models in the community are clear and consistent in their opposition to substance use and abuse” said Lisa Tomeny, Executive Director. “Red Ribbon Week reminds us all to continue our efforts in working together to be a drug-free community,” said Tomeny
